How can I protect myself ?

If you are traveling to a country where the virus is endemic :-

  • Wash fruit thoroughly with clean water and peel before eating.
  • Do not eat fruit that is found on the ground or otherwise which may have been partially eaten by animals.
  • Do not consume raw date palm sap. Raw or partially fermented date palm juice should be boiled before consumption.
  • Avoid unprotected physical contact with people with NiV virus. Avoid contact with blood or body fluids of anyone infected with NiV.
  • Regular hand washing at all times.
  • Avoid contact with bats and pigs.
  • Gloves and other protective clothing should be worn if handling sick animals or their fluid / open wounds, blood samples etc.
  • Seek medical attention if you develop symptoms whilst you are overseas, so the virus can be ruled out.

NOTE :- There is no approved vaccine for this virus. The main treatment is supportive care.
