NiV – Nipah Virus Outbreak 2024

Introduction to Niv-NipahVirus

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus that can be transmitted to humans from animals (both wild and domestic).

The Nipah virus is considered one of the most dangerous pathogens circulating in the wild. Fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family are the natural hosts of Nipah virus.

Fruit bats, also known as Pteropodidae, are a family of megabats. They are primarily frugivorous, meaning they mainly eat fruit. Some species also consume nectar, pollen, and insects. Fruit bats play a crucial role in the pollination and seed dispersal of many plant species in their ecosystems.

Nipah virus (NiV) can cause severe fever and brain swelling, and it is believed to have a mortality rate exceeding 50 per cent among those it infects.
